Dark fiber,
explained properly.

Dark fiber is glass with nothing on it. No light, no equipment, no service, until you put your own on each end. Carriers lease it to banks and hospitals for serious money. Here, it runs between neighbors.

Why it exists here

The spares were free. The trench was not.

Each phase trunk carries 72 fibers, and dedicated service pairs use around fifty of them. The rest ride along because glass in an open trench costs almost nothing, and they rest coiled in every tap vault on the ring. Those spare strands are the inventory. A dark-fiber link is two of them, spliced end to end between your vault and another lot's vault.

The path never enters the core. It is not routed, not firewalled, not monitored, not shared. There is no equipment on it at all until you plug in yours. Physically, it is a continuous strand of glass from your building to a neighbor's, and nobody else can see light on it without cutting it open in a vault you both know about.

What a private pair is for

Things that make sense when latency is zero and nobody is watching.

  • Backups that never touch the internet.Your files replicate to a machine in a friend's garage down the road, over your own glass, at whatever speed your optics run. Off-site backup with zero cloud bill.
  • Links where microseconds matter. Two households sharing a lab, a render farm, a game server: a direct pair is faster than any routed path could be, because there is nothing in the middle to route.
  • Serious work-from-home arrangements. Two partners in a business on adjacent lots can run their office network as one network, physically, the way a company would pay a metro carrier thousands a month to do.
  • Privacy by physics. Traffic on a private pair is not encrypted-and-shared; it is simply not present anywhere else. For some people and some data, that distinction is the whole point.

How it happens

A splice request, not a construction project.

Both lot owners ask, together. CIS assigns a spare pair, splices it through at the vaults between you, documents the path in the plant records, and hands you both ends. You put optics on it and light it however you like. Undoing it is the same operation in reverse, and the pair goes back to the spare pool.

The work is splice labor, priced like splice labor. The expensive part, the trench and the trunk that make it possible, went in with the roads, which is why this costs a service call here and a franchise negotiation everywhere else.
