The town

Athol, Idaho.
Population about seven hundred.

The Northern Pacific put a depot here in 1882 and the village incorporated in 1909. The population has held right around seven hundred ever since, which is the whole point of the place.

Everything below is somebody's actual business. We are listing them because a town you can name the businesses in is a different proposition from a subdivision with a highway exit, not because anyone asked us to or paid us to.

How the town got its name

A town that turned down an easier name

Athol was offered Silver City once, and said no thanks. A Boise news crew came up in 2020 for the naming story and left with the legend rather than the record. Also, a lake named for earrings, a city named for a leather punch, and a state named after a word somebody probably made up.
