For the hunter

Living at the edge of the Panhandle elk zone instead of driving to it. Elk, whitetail, moose, and bear in the units over the ridge, over-the-counter turkey, and public ground three miles up the road.

Some places you drive to hunt. This one you live where the hunting starts.

Clagstone sits at the edge of the Panhandle elk zone. Units 4A and 4, the Bernard Peak country over Lake Pend Oreille and the Coeur d’Alene Mountains beyond it, hold elk, whitetail, mule deer, moose, and black bear, and Fish and GameIdaho Fish and GameSeasons, rules, and tags for the Panhandle units.idfg.idaho.gov has reported stable elk numbers across the zone. The Panhandle is also some of the best over-the-counter wild turkey hunting in Idaho, with fall seasons running to the end of December in the surrounding units.

Getting to the ground is the part the location makes easy. The Bunco Road corridor into the Idaho Panhandle National Forests starts three miles up the road, and the country it opens runs from the ridges above the neighborhood deep into the national forest. You are not racing out of town on a Friday with the rest of the highway. You are ten minutes from the gate with the whole season in front of you.

The honest map matters, so here it is: the Stimson land next door is private working timber, and Farragut State Park and its wildlife management area are excluded from the general fall turkey season. The public hunting starts at the national forest, which is exactly what the Bunco corridor is for.

After the shot, the region holds up its end. Custom processing, curing, smoking, and sausage work is twenty-five minutes south in Post Falls. And the shop your six acres can hold, on three-phase power at every lot, runs the chest freezers, the grinder, and the vacuum sealer without a second thought, with room left over for a reloading bench and an honest place to hang a deer.

Elk for the freezer, birds in the fall, and a mudroom that expects you back.

All of that sits on actual ground. See the fifty-eight on the plat →
